Grit Tempered II: Famous Women in Florida Archaeology

Osceola County Historical Society 4155 W. Vine Street

March 18, 12:00:00 PM — 01:00:00 PM

In 1991 the book Grit Tempered: Early Women Archaeologists in the Southeastern United States was published to highlight to contributions of women who made archaeology what it is today. Since that time, the tradition of strong women archaeologists has continued. This talk presupposes a Grit Tempered II sequel and nominates five phenomenal Florida women for consideration: Kathleen Deagan (St. Augustine), Judy Bense (Pensacola), Bonnie McEwan (Tallahassee), Rebecca Saunders (Amelia Island) and Nancy White (Gulf Coast). Come learn more about these women, their enduring impact on how we understand our past, and the sites that made them famous. Sarah Miller from Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) will be presenting this lecture you won\'t want to miss. Discovering Luna’s Colony

Heritage Park and Cultural Center 139 Miracle Strip Pkwy SE

March 18, 06:00:00 PM — 07:00:00 PM

In 1559 the Spanish Crown ordered Tristán de Luna to settle Pensacola. Within a month of their arrival disaster struck- a hurricane rocked the colony and sank most of Luna\'s fleet carrying the food and supplies. The colony struggled to survive for the next two years, but ultimately it ended in failure. Over the past two decades University of West Florida underwater archaeologists discovered and excavated two vessels from Luna\'s sunken fleet. Yet, the location of the settlement on land has evaded historians and archaeologists for decades... until now. In 2015 University of West Florida archaeologists announced they found the location of Luna\'s settlement. This talk will reveal the recent discovery of the first multi-year European settlement in the continental United States. The presenter, Mr. Mike Thomin, is the manager of the Destination Archaeology Resource Center. Mike received his B.A. in history from the University of West Florida and is finishing his M.A. in public history. Mike has spent nearly a decade working in museums and public archaeology.
