Please join us for the opening reception of our newest temporary exhibit: “Indios Amigos: Aztec Allies and the (New) Spanish Conquest of La Florida.”
The reception will take place during Pensacola’s Gallery Night on Friday, December 20, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Destination Archaeology Resource Center, located at 207 East Main Street in Downtown Pensacola.
“Indios Amigos” highlights the vital yet often overlooked contributions of Aztec artisans and warriors who accompanied Tristán de Luna’s 1559 expedition to establish the first permenant Spanish settlement in Pensacola. Drawing from the thesis work of Christina Bolte, Collections Manager at the University of West Florida’s Archaeology Institute, the exhibit brings to life through history and science the resilience, cultural heritage, and adaptability of these indigenous allies in shaping the early history of La Florida.
The reception will feature light food and beverages, and attendees will have the opportunity to meet the exhibit curator Christina Bolte, who will be available to answer questions and share insights about her research and the artifacts on display.
