The African American Gainer Historical Cemetery is located along the border of Bay County, Florida. An African American community has utilized this space since the arrival of settlers in 1825. It remains an integral component in the cultural identity of the original population’s modern descendants. Even in its current incarnation, the cemetery contains evidence of ththe persistent use of old African-style customs, such as the utilization of traditional funerary material culture. Descriptions of oral histories, archaeological field work, material culture analysis, and geophysical techniques will help to assess the changing use and modern reincorporation of a ceremonial landscape by an African American community over time.
FPAN is attending this event.
