Apalachicola Arsenal
The U.S. constructed this arsenal between 1834 and 1839 which when complete was an impressive walled compound with two external powder magazines. On January 6, 1861, the arsenal was seized by Florida state militia and remained in Confederate hands throughout the war. Its main service during the Civil War was as a Confederate Training camp.
The two remaining buildings of the arsenal are now part of the Florida State Hospital. The officers ouarters and guard room can be viewed on the campus of the state hospital, although photographs are not allowed. The remaining powder magazine is undergoing stabilization and restoration in order to preserve this important building and to prepare it for use as a museum.
