Milton, Arcadia Mill

1827 - 1855

Arcadia was an early, major water powered mill complex in operation from 1827 until 1855. A series of mills produced lumber and cotton, and the site also had for a time a pail factory. Operation ceased forever in 1855 when the last mill burned.

Regardless of the fact that the mills were not in operation by the time of the Civil War, there is a story that U.S. troops visited Arcadia during the Civil War and blew up the mill dam to prevent use by the Confederacy.

The site of Arcadia Mill is owned and operated by the University of West Florida, West Florida Historic Preservation, Inc.  There is a visitor center at the site that explains the history of this important mill complex, and a boardwalk throught the archaeological remains of this site.  There are informative waysides on this boardwalk that explain the archaeological remains and the natural environment that you will encounter along the way.

The site and visitor center are open from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM Tuesday through Saturday.  Guided tours are offered at 11:00, 1:00, and 2:330.  Admission is free.
