Graduate student Alex Delgado will be sharing his research. More than just Empty Space? Integrated Geoarchaeological Investigations of a Plaza Abstract Crystal River (8CI1) is a Woodland period archaeological site on the west-central Gulf Coast of Florida. The site is famous for its diverse suite of exotic artifacts typical of the Hopewell Interaction Sphere, and for its elaborate monumental architecture comprised of shell mounds surrounding a central plaza. Historically, plazas are utilized as spaces for cultural expression, daily interactions between members of the community, economic exchanges, and discourse of all types. They also serve as a symbolic space, critical to the formation and maintenance of cultural identity while also embodying social and political relations. Much of what is known concerning the use of plazas at Precolumbian sites in the Southeast originates from ethnohistoric accounts; however, my study seeks to ground-truth these accounts via the utilization of integrated geoarchaeological techniques. For this study I employ ground penetrating radar and magnetometry, as well as microartifact and sediment chemical analysis to allow me to reconstruct the possible activities which were undertaken in the plaza at the Crystal River site.
