Pioneer Day offers family fun of all kinds. Special and traditional Florida foods--such as swamp cabbage and strawberry shortcake--are available. A “Discover History” hands-on area is FREE for children and includes old-fashioned toys and games, cane pole fishin’, washing with a a scrub board and wash pot, a pitcher pump, writing with a dip pen, orange juicin’, and more. Demonstrators show off their skills in basket-weaving, black-smithing, butter-churning, candledipping, quilting, soap-making, spinning, woodworking, and other crafts. Clubs, churches, and other organizations display their history. The Suncoast Dulcimers--a hammered dulcimer group; the Fiddle Crabs--an old-time string band; Barney and Penny Meese; and Lee James entertain along with legendary characters Arcadia Albritton Coker and James Mitchell “Acrefoot” Johnson--plus a frontier shoot-out at noon. Animals, antique engines, vintage automobiles, a classic fire truck, Florida authors and artists--all showcase Florida’s unique heritage and history.

Join the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) at the Weeden Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center on Saturday, March 21st from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. for the Archaeology Works Expo. Attendees will have the chance to participate in hands-on activities from all the Archaeology Works workshops we have offered to date. Children and adults will experience archaeology in various ways, ranging from the methods archaeologists use to learn about the past to recreating the technologies of Florida’s early residents. Fortress of Freedom: The Founding of Fort Mose

From 10AM to 4PM, join Florida Living History, Fort Mose Historic State Park, the Fort Mose Historical Society, and other volunteers in this heritage Event commemorating the 277th anniversary of the establishment of this bastion of freedom! At 2PM, Dr. Anthony E. Dixon, President of Archival and Historical Research Associates, Field Director for the Florida African American Heritage Preservation Network, and Adjunct Professor of History at Florida A&M University, will present a lecture entitled \"The African Diaspora in Florida.\" In addition, copies of the following documents will be on display: -King Carlos II of Spain’s 1693 proclamation granting freedom to black refugees fleeing from the tyranny of English slavery in the Carolinas and Georgia to liberty in Spanish Florida; -Governor Montiano’s 1740 letter to King Felipe V of Spain, discussing his establishment of Fort Mose and the role the free black militia played in the defense Admission to this Event is free of charge to the public. There is a Museum admission fee of $2.00 per adult; children (age 5 and younger) are free.
