Public Archaeology at Clay County Archives Jailhouse

FPAN and CCA will dig a single test unit at the grounds of the 1890 courthouse and 1894 jail .The research goal of this dig is to demonstrate to those interested how an archaeological dig on a historic site is done. Join the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) at the Weeden Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center on Saturday, March 1st from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. for the Archaeology Works Expo. Attendees will have the chance to participate in hands-on activities from all the Archaeology Works workshops we have offered to date. Children and adults will experience archaeology in various ways, ranging from the methods archaeologists use to learn about the past to recreating the technologies of Florida’s early residents. Bring the family to this free event to hang out with archaeologists from FPAN and the Central Gulf Coast Archaeological Society and see if you could survive life in Prehistoric Florida!

Dash Through the Past

The Florida Public Archaeology Network will host Dash Through the Past, a run/walk scavenger hunt race in downtown Pensacola in celebration of Florida Archaeology Month, on March 1 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. This is the first official event in Pensacola to celebrate Florida Archaeology Month throughout March. rnrnDash through the Past will begin and end at the FPAN Coordinating Center at 207 East Main Street in downtown Pensacola (next to the Fish House). This race through historic, downtown Pensacola offers individuals or teams of two a chance to compete over a two-mile course for prizes. rnrnRegistration starts at 9:00 a.m. and the hunt begins at 10:00 a.m. Each participant will receive a map and a list of challenges on the day of the race. There is no set route or order in which challenges must be completed. Prizes will be awarded to first place and runner up. Participants will also have a chance to pick up a free copy of the 2014 Florida Archaeology Month poster.rnrnAfterwards, participants are encouraged to stay and rough sort artifacts from excavations conducted by UWF in the FPAN Public Archaeology Lab until 2:00 p.m.rn rn
